Sudden Absence of SPAM

16 posts in this topic

This is an odd query because I suppose I should be happy about it but, as someone who had been receiving up to 25 pieces of SPAM in my in box on a daily basis, I was surprised to notice a complete absence of SPAM about ten days ago since when I haven't received a solitary item.

I must add that I have never taken steps to block this unsolicited stuff as it never got completely out of hand and it was something that I simply never got around to doing. The subject matter was mainly the usual

stuff about replica watches, Viagra, penis enlargement and Casinos.

My question is:-why, without me taking any preventative action, has SPAM completely disappeared from my in box? Is it simply the fact that the perpetrators of SPAM have never had any response from me?

Has your ISP just implemented SPAM filtering on their servers?

Or maybe, if they already had it, have they made their filters more aggressive? Are you missing any other mail that you were expecting?

If your ISP has a webmail facility in the same way Virgin Media does you should be able to log on to your mailbox on there and check the contents of the Spam folder.

My internet provider is Virgin Media and I have McAfee security.

Thanks for the responses. I'm a bit late getting back to you as I'm only just home. My ISP is Windows XP/Microsoft but I'm a complete technophobe although I keep meaning to try and learn more about computers when time allows. My PC was second hand from my sister and I acquired it about 8 years ago. It's actually lasted longer than I expected but has several flaws. I've already decided to buy a new PC when it finally does expire but, getting back to the point, I'm wasn't aware that my ISP had introduced Spam filtering as I thought that it was necessary for me to take such steps if I wished. I don't seem to have a Spam folder to which Spam is redirected.

I'm not missing any important e mails but, funnily enough, I have a friend who sends me messages now and then and his e mails, for some reason, have always been classified as Spam in the subject box. As I've not heard from him recently it occurred to me that his messages weren't getting through but, lo and behold, when I got home tonight, there was a message from him which wasn't classified as Spam.

By ISP I mean Internet Service Provider.

If you log on to their homepage they may well have an option to view your mail box on their web site rather than using whichever email client (e.g. Outlook/Outlook Express etc) you use on your machine.

If you do you may well find a spam folder on there which contains tens or hundreds of spam emails which have been filtered out from your mailbox on their server before it's delivered to your machine. It's worth checking that occasionally just in case you don't receive expected emails in case it got trapped by their filters (if someone sent you a genuine mail mentioning penis extenders or viagra for example it's might well get stopped by your ISP because those are the sort of terms that get picked up :)).

Mail that's labelled as spam when it treaches your machine could be being labelled by the ISP's server software, or it could be being labelled that way by your email software client using filters it contains and which are updated regularly (if you use Outlook for example).

Well, my original ISP was Freeserve but they've been taken over by Orange. My only e mail account is Outlook Express. I did open a separate account provided by the ISP but never got into the habit of using it. I don't use the Orange home page but will look into it.

Thanks for the advice, JLM

Aidan, you say you aquired your PC 8 years ago and it was second hand, could be time to think about investing in a new one, prices are actually cheaper than ten years ago. :)

Saying you were with Orange explains it. They have just introduced Spam filtering, to stop it getting through to your inbox/junk mail folder.

You should have had an e mail from them about a month ago explaining this. There was an option to opt out of this filtering and continue to receive Spam e mails if you wished.

Thanks, Cynic. I've probably still got that e mail in my deleted box but, meanwhile, I'll be happy to continue with my Spam free existence!

Not quite as rosy as it sounds though. A spam filter stands quite a good chance of filtering out some genuine mail, so it's worth getting on top of it eventually, and checking what turns up in the spam folder.

Dead right! It appears I had a Nigerian relative who had left me millions of pounds but my stupid email system put the email in my spam folder. By the time I had found it it was too late and I lost out on my inheritance.

They never reply back, for example I recieved this :-

---------------------------

From Mrs. Gloria Zamba and Son Johnson

Dearest in christ Jesus,

My name is Mrs Gloria Zamba a nationality of Kuwait. I am married to late Mr. JAMES ZAMBA who worked with Kuwait embassy in Ivory Coast for nine years before he died in the year Octorber 2003. We were married for twenty years with a child. He died after a the illness that lasted for four days.

Before his death we were both born again Christians. When my late husband was alive we deposited the sum of (Ten Million U.S.Dollars) with one of good banks here in Cote d'Ivoire Presently, this money is still with the bank. Recently my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next three months due to my cancer problem,Though what disturbs me most is my stroke. Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to church or better still a Christian individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct here in.I want a person or church that will use this fund to churches, orphanages, research centres and widows propagating the word of God and to ensure that the house of God is maintained.

The Bible made us to understand that blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because I have a child that will inherit this money but my son can not carryout this work only because i and my late husband decide to use some of the money to work for God and live some for our son to have a better live.our son is just 17yearold now and been grow up in africa, he have low manterity and my husband's relatives are not Christians and I don't want my family hard earned money to be misused by unbelievers,I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly manner.Hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraid of death hence I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace.

I will like you to understand that my contact to you is a divine direction from God , I don't want any of my husband family relatives to recieve this money but I know that With God all things are possible. As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the Finance/bank. I will also issue you a letter of authority that will empower you as the new beneficiary of this fund. I want you and the church to always pray for me because the lord is my shepherd. My happiness is that I live a life of a worthy Christian.Whoever that wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and truth,Please always be prayerful all through your life. Any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing for a church or Christian individual for this same purpose. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I stated here and Please I will like you to contact me Immediately you receive this mail so that I will instruct the Bank to transfer this fund into your account for me and my Son to start coming over there because since two days now we are having a very big problem in Abidjan here the REBELS Went into the military camp and killed so many military so we need this transaction very urgent.

Remain blessed in the name of the Lord.

Mrs. Gloria Zamba and Son Johnson

I replied thus :-

From The Church of the Blessed Saint SaSfan of Assisi

Dearest in Elijah

God does indeed work in mysterious ways his wonders to perform, what a harrowing and heart-rending tale you have sent me, you must be out of your mind with worry my dear, and you with your stroke and all. I can tell from the tone of your Email that you are a sincere and devout person who has been dealt several major blows and is just about at the end of her tether, fear not dear lady for help draws nigh and together we shall walk into the promised land hand in hand with heads held high singing praises to the Lord, in fact I think this is a very apt point at which to offer up a prayer, so if you would like to kneel with me for a moment we shall pray;

Dear Lord look upon your servants here assembled and grant that Mrs Zamba is not struck and that her beloved son Johnson's manterity is fully restored, while I have your attention Lord I would just like to bring up the small matter of Mrs Cuthbert at No 11, if you remember, well of course you do - silly me - that's why you're up there and I'm down here isn't it?, the last time we spoke concerning her "waterworks" problem I mentioned that the temporary solution of placing plastic sheeting on the pews certainly helped in the inevitable clean up operations however Brother Martin has complained on a couple of occasions that the continuous rustling noises during sermons has made it very difficult for him to concentrate so if you could just spare a moment of your time to organise a minor and very localised plague of drought you would ease the burdens of both Brother Martin and myself, one more thing Lord, Sister Ophelia asked me to say that the thing with the loincloth and ram's horn worked a treat, Amen.

As you have been so honest with me in the description of your general situation and various ailments I feel it only good manners to reply in kind. My name Is Brother Tarquin and I am the Treasurer and Head Bingo Caller of The Church of the Blessed Saint SaSfan of Assisi, now I know what you're thinking, "I've heard of Saint Francis of Assisi but never Saint SaSfan of Assisi, well it is not very widely known that Francis was often accompanied on his many journeys by a boy called Bernadone, as an aside Bernadone was also the name of Francis' father and that fact is of no little consequence as you will eventually find out, as time went on Francis collected many followers and founded the Order of Mendicant Friars or Franciscans, however he always favoured Bernadone and was determined that Bernadone would succeed him upon his death, the only problem was that Francis and his father did not exactly see eye-to-eye and knowing that it was fairly likely that Bernadone would achieve sainthood he decided that a new name must be found for his prot

Keep warm in the burning bush

Tarquin.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can you believe that I did not get a reply?

Yes.

It wasnt so long ago that someone agreed to help one of these spambos with an offer to send the requested bank details etc but the bank manager had charged them £? to arrange everything and could the spammers pay that before the bank details were sent. The Spammers sent the £? showing that karma is indeed all around us.

I can also add that "Burning bush" is a very nasty Nigerian STD and a socially taboo subject in the upper class areas of Abuja city. -"Keep warm in the burning bush" is an age old curse meaning "I hope your penis burns & shrivels with the pain of the unclean woman"....and you expect a reply?

The next big thing is the lottery win from Jamaica. They tell you you have won the lottery. You pay £x to have the winnings sent over.

This is despite you having no idea you scrached off to reveal "tree mangos" or indeed knowing the Jamican lottery existed or ever having bought a ticket for it.
