Ginseng?

32 posts in this topic

I recently bought a pack of genseng that was on offer from a reliable herbalist. After about a week I am like a bloody teenager again, waking up with really hard erections. No other signs yet, I have not sprouted hair on the palms of my hand or caught acne.

I assumed most herbal aphrodisiacs were mostly harmless and marginal at the best but this is intriguing. Maybe the herbalist is not so reliable and I better send the pills to the lab for analysis.

So, just wondering if anyone else has taken ginseng with similar results? I am quite prepared to believe it is psychosomatic or the last flutter of the candle as it were.

Ps. A disclaimer. I have not invested the Lessingham millions in reliable herbalist shops or ginseng farms ................... yet

Never heard of that but I could be wrong, of course.

Ha ha, I remember reading similar stories about the way some herbalists prepare their stuff..... especially the ones who just came from China.  I would be curious what lab results would say?

I mean of course I heard of it, but never heard it worked, like tiger balls do no work either. By the way I tried horse balls one day in Brazil, not yummy.

OMG I remember during my veggie teen years I started taking Ginseng herbal pills and tea. The energy boost it gives you is incredible, really puts a spring in your step. I shall get some, thanks for reminding me about this stuff x

It does work. Its not like a drug, you dont take it and immediately have an energy rush it builds up and after a few days you suddenly realise how much of  a spring you have in your step, so to speak. I think the Korean stuff is meant to be the strongest.

Yes what I meant was, does it make a man hard? That was the assumption in OP. Otherwise yes ginseng is a good natural supplement, agreed.

I have no penis therefore Im afraid you will have to take the OPs word for it. I see absolutley no reason why he would make it up though. He wasnt making an assumption. He simply was explaining how it has had an effect on him personally I think x

I would be wary of taking herbal medicines especially in pill form where you don't know the contents. I'm not sure ginseng is traditionally prescribed for increasing libidos or your sex life in general. In Chinese medicine you use it for increasing strength when recuperating from illness. Don't know enough about Chinese medicines to say if there are ones that help your sex life but I'm sure all the Chinese herbal shops will be happy to take your money and tell you it all works!

They never managed to convince me in buying their stuff.  I wonder if they spoke better English I will be easier convinced.  Even their massages were the worst ever when done by the girls with little fingers leaving me in pain afterwards.  With one exception when the massage was done by an ex Olympic Chinese member of some fighting team: I had to stop him on hitting my back so hard  :)

At the risk of disagreeing yes he was making an assumption. He was assuming, or rather questioning, if ginseng was the reason he was hard. And as you said you are not a man, correct?

Or maybe I misread OP. If you mean you get morning erections, this is good then. There are  some natural viagra types of products sold in Amsterdam among other places, and I think they include ginseng + more herbs. But to my knowledge no natural product will do what the prescription drugs can do.

You can buy this stuff in the british health shops. You dont have to buy them from chines herbalists. All ingredients are labelled on the back and usually there is nothing in them other than ginseng apart from what the actual caplets containing the ginseng powder are made of

He was linking the two as there is a direct correlation between him starting to take ginseng and suddenly getting morning erections again. Its a logical conclusion to come to if you ask me. This doesnt mean it would happen for others though but its a good bet its a welcome side effect for him. Yes, Im not a man but I can comment on male issues just as you feel you can comment on female issues, correct?

Yes, it may the Umbrella logical paradox working. (Have you ever noticed that when lots of people open their umbrellas it rains?) or a non causal co incidence.  The lab reports will probably come back saying "This camel is unfit to work!"

Maybe after the erections go down, the spring in my step will appear, Chloe!

I've always thought that Korean ginseng was a 'virility enhancer', which is why women should use the Siberian type?!

Yes it is, but mild.

Some dangerous stuff lurks in Chinese herbalists so the warning is fair. When you think rhino horn is seen as a cure for impotence you have to ask yourself whatever else is in those jars and not much regulation goes on as to what they sell.

As Chloe says, lots of safe high street sources for it, or just grow one in your garden (Ginko Biloba) and simply rub up against it 3 times a day. It's a very attractive tree in full leaf. ;)

Good point. Rhino horn is horrendously expensive, and Chinese are well known for faking stuff, so buyer beware.

Not only is rhino horn expensive and illegal to trade , unfortunately what it was originally used for medically has been warped out of all recognition by quack Chinese doctors and others looking to jump on the 'alternative medicine' bandwagon. So all Chinese medicine is known for now is curing impotence, increasing sex drive and eczema!

It's always struck me how arrogant some authoritative people are labelling medical knowledge from cultures spanning thousands of years as alternative when compared to a medical history of a few hundred years.

Back on topic again, I believe ginseng (and certain derivatives) increases blood flow which is why Chinese call it a 'hot' medicine so might explain blood flow to certain areas. Don't be so sure that herbal medicines can't give you ill effects though. But as Chloe has said, British/western health food shops would be more strictly controlled

I remember a commedian saying that 3000 years ago we had a pile of leaves. What worked we call medicine, what did not we call call alternate medicine.
