Excellent, possibly the most useful thing the Hate Mail has ever done.

With friends like Jan Moir, who needs...

(Just think for a moment: suppose this media mercenary was paid to fight JC's corner, instead of being ordered to spit mud towards the gov. pretty picture ?)

Anyway, I never liked the mail, but that editorial merits a link.

Despite a lot of effect seeking drivel, it IS good Criticism of the proposal.

Some gems in there.

Apparently, upper-echelon Ladies are to be found in the casino where the writer herself also likes to visit to enjoy the perfectly mixed cocktails :

Like migratory birds sinking their feet into the soft, welcome mud of an African lakeside, prostitutes flock to casinos.

Then there is some alliterated anger about supposed drug-addicted prostitutes, followed by a nice sneer at JC:

Yet Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, under whose care all these lost girls are found, is not interested in prostitutes. Not really. She hasn't actually ever met one, or personally canvassed an opinion from one.

Later on, there are these badly smelling, but nicely put lines of Truth:

Smith's mad ramblings and ideals, forged in the hairy armpit heat of Seventies feminism and untrammelled by a sliver of practical common sense ever since, make me want to scream. All she will succeed in doing is driving the trafficked women further underground - making them more vulnerable to deeper depravity - and undermining the country's rape laws while she is at it.
(writer probably smells own armpits while completing editorials at 03:00)

It then goes on to paint a fairly accurate picture of joe-kerb-crawling-punter, sweaty fivers in hand, unable to make any decision based on principles (that would attempt to portray some of the posters on here). And it closes with a conclusion that has my blessing :

Yes, offences [she refers to trafficking, drugs and pimping] are being committed but these half-baked, modish new laws will never make it through the courts. The policing of them is unenforceable.

They will make no impression and no difference, while millions of pounds of public money - which we can ill afford - will go straight into the gutter because of them. On the roulette wheel of life, we have all lost out. Again.

I'd never though I'd endorse an over-the-top mail-commentary, but Winston himself comes to mind: "If Hitler invaded hell I would make at least a favorable reference to the devil."

So a careful Cheers to the mail here.

nb: anyone noticed Jacqui and Jimmy only differ by one initial?
