Just Popped Up On Facebook, An Advert For Adultwork

22 posts in this topic

Seriously unimpressed with this.  I presume Adultwork have paid for this to appear on my page.  Is there anyway I can block it?  Am I not going to be able to browse Facebook with friends or family present without this bloody thing appearing?

Use a different browser or always clear your cookies.

Facebook are notorious for data mining everything you do on the Internet.

I think you can mark the ads as offensive / not relevant

Don't use the same browser you use to access your Facebook, problem solved.

They pick up on these things, so you should probably be more careful.

Indeed. If you're surfing porn, adultwork, PN and any other 'adult' websites whilst logged into social networks such as Facebook, Google+ etc, they will mine your browsing habits. Use a completely different browser which uses a different set of cookies for your SFW browsing. Sites such as these have built in social networking frameworks which allow pages/profiles to be shared via these methods - Gawd knows why, but they do.

I tend to use Firefox - preferences switched to clear all history & cookies on quit. Also I use a VPN which hides the IP address - and also install add-on applications such as ghostery, adblock plus.

Would also be wise to have a cache cleaner app too for windows or mac.

Same goes for your mobile too.

if you must visit AW then don't use your operating system or your home broadband, run your pc/laptop with a copy of LINUXMINT 17.2 as a live disc and use a 3mobile dongle.

Run Firefox or Opera Browsers for looking at "naughty" things, both offer private mode, and Opera will clear cache on exit.

use chrome "incognito" -  not a prefect solution but will stop the basic shite like FB trolling where you're going online

Just get yourself an ad blocker. It hide all the annoying ads from any site!

Mine is Adblock Plus. It's free and I never have to see any adverts or pop ups. I've had it a while and hasn't had any effect on my PC.

I've never had cross-over ads from any of my accounts. As far as I'm aware I don't have any special settings to block this. I did have an ad blocker but it interfered with iplayer and also blocked genuine provider ads on a well known regional forum, so I removed it.

I use iplayer all the time- I may have had to block adblock on it though-I can't recall but you can choose not to have it on on some sites and it's dead easy to do this.

Install ghostery on all browsers and block all trackers. Advertisers are tracking every link you click.

If you use any website which has a facebook/google+/twitter 'like' '+1' or 'tweet' icon; the website themselves are not tracking your data, but the social networks do if you're logged in and haven't reset your cookies/history cache.

If you use the same browser for your social networking, and happen to click on one of those buttons - they store a cookie with a web url path that links back to the originating website where you clicked.

Like others have said. Ghostery, adblock are very useful for stopping all that crap. Set your browser to delete history and cookies on quit. I also use a script blocker, though not for the uninitiated, helps control and stop all that deep code from mining your stuff!

Here's what I do:

use a hosts file from here (updated every few months)

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

use Firefox with ghostery, NoScript (and other) extensions.

allow cookies for current site but not 3rd party sites.

clear browser cache and run CCleaner often.

If you want you can also use a different Operating System, a proxy/VPN and a different internet connection.

And use Private Browsing / Incognito mode depending on your browser.

Run CCleaner regularly  https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download    (The free version is quite adequate)

I've got a secret email address for punting related stuff.

I think social media is incompatible with a punting lifestyle as it is so insecure.  I would advise all punters to not use it.
