For Sex Workers In Scotland, Life May Be About To Get Safer

5 posts in this topic

Interesting piece in The Grauniad about Jean Urquhart's proposals to the Scottish Parliament last week.

"The UK’s first ever comprehensive proposals to protect sex workers’ safety and rights, based on the successful New Zealand model, were lodged in the Scottish parliament last week."

As required by the Scottish Parliament's rules, Jean Urquhart has launched a consultation in relation to her draft proposal "for a Bill to decriminalise activities associated with the buying and selling of sexual services and to strengthen the laws against coercion in the sex industry".

You can read a summary of her proposals at:-

http://www.scottish.parliament.uk/S4_MembersBills/2015-09-3_Prostitution_Law_Reform_Bill_consultation_-_final.pdf

where you will also find details of how to respond to the consultation. Responses need to be submitted by 1st December.

The proposals are well thought out and convincingly argued. Even if you don't feel able to respond, the consultation is a very good read and marshalls a set of coherent arguments for decriminalising sex work along the lines of the model that was implemented in New Zealand in 2003.

Hopefully this will become law!

I guess this may now be less likely given that Jean Urquhart resigned from the SNP in 2012 and, as the Highlands and Islands regional  candidate for her new party RISE, she was not elected to the Scottish Parliament in yesterday's election.

In the Highlands and Islands region RISE only got 0.4% of the votes, so Jean Urquhart was not elected.

I thought I would visit Jean Urquhart's web site to see if she had any further plans for her sex worker campaign, but neither Firefox nor IE will let me access her web site at jeanurquhart.com saying that the owner has not configured it properly and that it is therefore a security risk.

Sorry to hear this! The SNP are most certainly not a safe pair of hands on this one! And The Fake Socialists up there, even though they ntook it up the hole in this election are frothing at the mouth to introduce sex worker hating legislation.
