British prostitutes warn that criminalising clients would reduce safety

3 posts in this topic

From yesterday's Independent:

Britain’s prostitutes fear any attempt to criminalise their clients would have “disastrous consequences” for their safety and could put lives in danger.

More than nine out of 10 say they are against criminalising the buying of sex and eight out of 10 fear it would impact on their safety, according to the biggest ever survey of the nation’s sex workers on legislation.

The findings of the survey, seen by The Independent, are being revealed as the Commons Home Affairs Committee begins accepting evidence for a controversial inquiry into prostitution laws.

Pity the paper had to use the usual stretewalker pictures given it's already illegal to buy sex from them

The streewalker pictures are not only a cliché they are seldom authentic, IMHO.

There is very little, if any, evidence that the law in Sweden has reduced prostitution there. It may be that the number of streetworkers has gone down, though that is not certain. However, there are thousands of sex workers advertising on line there  (  http://www.en.realescort.se/   is one of many examples) which calls into question the claims by MP Fiona Bruce and her friends about the "sucess" of the Swedish model.

Closer to home, I have been looking at the effect of criminalising purchase of sex in Northern Ireland since June 2015. Again my conclusion is that this change has had no measurable effect on the number of sexworkers advertising on line. So given that evidence from actual sexworkers say that making the purchase of sex illegal will increase their risks, such a change in the law should be rejected.
