The Salvation Army apologises for an appallingly offensive marketing campaign

The Salvation Army apologises for an appallingly offensive marketing campaign.

And so they should. Big shout out to the hundreds of outraged Twitter users whose protests gave the Salvation Army a much needed reality check, and a small round of applause for the Sally Ann for being prepared to admit they made a mistake here.

Although they've quite rightly now apologised, I think the fact that they originally thought this campaign aproach was a good idea speaks volumes about the mindsets of those at the top of the Salvation Army organisation.

WOW! That's really scraping rock bottom with that one. Good on them for apologising but I really hope whoever came up with that idea got fired! I sense a little bit of personal bias behind this one...

One of Jesus's ancestors, named Rehab was a prostitute. So, a bit silly of the Salvation Army to ostracise sex workers.

I can happily supply the refernces, for "doubting Thomas'" that don't believe me.

Am I daydreaming, or is the Salvation Army's general line on public policy on prostitution relatively enlightened?

I don't doubt it, but I would be interested to read the references.

The SA often uses graphic and sensational images to promote its fund-raising appeals. This time the Australian SA it appears overstepped the mark and, when they realised, they quickly apologised so credit to them for that. I don't doubt the SA has members who are ill-informed anti-prostitution bigots but on balance I think their views are generally enlightened and I will continue to give them a few quid when I see them ratting their tins.

Actually, I like the Sallly Ann. They are old fashioned bonkers with the bands and uniforms but they do a lot of the hands on dirty charity.

I would have expected the Vicar to come up with this information! Perhaps he's still counting the collection

Most prostitutes get a good press in the Bible.

The Gospel of Mark chapter 1:5 details geneology of Jesus which includes Rehab.

The epistle of James 2.25 speaks of "Rehab the harlot"

This is the public domain version translated from Greek.  Some translations of the old testament say she was an innkeeper. In the original Hebrew she is a prostitute. She helps Joshua found Israel, so Ken Livingstone would hate her.

Message to any escorts who read this, I do not talk about religion at bookings. So if contact you and ask for a booking, the only thing I may whisper is a silly rhyme. So don't be put off by my biblical knowledge, I am just as well  versed in science, finance, travel  engineering and literature. (I am a boring bastard)

Surely, in most of history the boundary between the two has been very vague? Think of the saloon bars in the very decorous westerns of the fifties. And certainly in medieval and early modern England it was so.

Except in Hebrew she is described as  zoonah, which translates as prostitute. More detailed reading shows her as running a brothel for merchants. Later translators  could not bear the thought that Jesus could be descended from a prostitute so translated that she was an innkeeper.

Whether you agree with my ingerpretation and that of many scholars is irrelevant to my point. Which is that a Christian organisation has  spread nasty smears about the parenting of sex workers, which is ironic as many accounts of the Bible can denonstrate that Jesus' mum might have been a virgin, but his great, great  great granny was  a sex worker.  Yay for her.

And yes, by and large, most prostitutes / sex workers do get a good pressin the bible

What on earth is "travel engineering" or is there a comma missing?

I, too, can be a boring bastard!!

Yes there is a comma missing. However, traffic engineering is also a distinct discipline. If applied properly it minimises the impact of high density housing developments on the road infrastructure.

A measure which should be welcomed by the Salvation Army, as properly planned traffic schemes reduce profanity and blasphemy

 Less congestion, less motorists swearing.

And yes, I am taking the piss.

wow, sorry no kudos for admitting their mistake. It shouldnt have been done in the first place. Seems they have a history of using sex work to gain cash donations though, is there any surprise considering they are a religion linked group,

I have chatted with the odd client about stuff in the bible.  Including one who was a a man of the cloth.  We had fantastic in-depth discussions for pillow talk.

Here's an excellent article which someone should share with the authors of the appalling Salvation Army campaign:

I'd expect such drivel from a Christian group.

Good on them for giving a full apology. It was probably someone in their marketing department having a momentary lapse of good taste!
