A prostitute has spoken to the News about Cambridge's sex industry and has hit out at police for raiding city brothels.

Jenny, who has asked for her real name to be withheld, has lifted the lid on the city's hidden sex industry.

Police have previously targeted Histon Road area over streetwalkers, along with support services to help the women to get off the street. Officers launched a crackdown on the illegal trade three years ago and a targeted operation helped to scare off kerb-crawlers but the move forced some streetwalkers to charge as little as £10 for sex, as the News reported.

But since then there have been no complaints reported from residents about streetwalkers in the area. However, the force has been targeting illegal brothels.

Last year a raft of arrests were made as part of an operation to safeguard people from suspected human trafficking after police raided two suspected brothels in Cambridge. Police swooped on a property in Cromwell Road, Romsey and another property in the city which was not disclosed.

Jenny, 37, who has previously worked in brothels and massage parlours and is now an 'independent' escort, believes police are making it worse for women.

She said: “There's about 18 or so independent girls working Cambridge as well as some from the agencies who can come in from other towns but of those about three or four are girls who travel. They go to each town and stay for a couple of weeks as the men want to see new ladies."

“The police are really good at protecting us if we get into trouble with a violent client or those who don't pay up as we are doing nothing illegal."

“But raiding the brothels in Cambridge is a big mistake. The brothels are a safe place for the girls where they are not allowed to take drugs and are in a clean environment. Busting the brothels forces them into more dangerous situations."

A police spokeswoman defended the action on brothels.

She said: “Our priority is safeguarding vulnerable people, and we would avoid taking any action which would mean putting vulnerable people on the streets. We will seek to take action where any illegal activity is taking place, however our primary focus around brothels is where there is evidence of people being trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation."

What a shame the article doesn't make it clear whether the raids uncovered any instances of human trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation. The raids were long enough ago, surely the journalist should have asked the police this question and reported their response.

...and more!

"Jenny, 37, an independent escort, believes police are making it worse for women. Now she has been supported by the Cottenham based pensioner and Dr Belinda Brooks-Gordon, a former county councillor and an expert in sex industry law who wants decriminalisation."

The article claims that "...a doctor 'prescribed a prostitute' because his wife went off sex." I wonder if I can get one over the counter...?

I do know there was a dodgy one in the Cambridge city centre operating. - maybe that was the one targeted in the city. Run by a really nasty Eastern European Pimp apparently.
