Vera Baird on advertising and punternet

65 posts in this topic

from a debate yesterday:

Vera Baird (Solicitor General, Attorney General's Office; Redcar, Labour)

We have tackled newspapers that advertise prostitution by asking the Newspaper Society to tighten its guidelines, which it has done. The number of advertisements referring to, for example, "fresh foreign girls available every week" has diminished enormously. Tackling the trafficking element has been an effective part of the action we have taken. Personally, I am interested in looking at whether we should make it unlawful to put such an advertisement in a newspaper, as it is in Ireland, and we will look at that legislation to see whether it would help here.

and later she says:

Vera Baird (Solicitor General, Attorney General's Office; Redcar, Labour)

I was pleased to hear him welcome our intended further restriction on newspaper advertising for prostitutes. The law in Ireland seems capable of being transferred across, although there is probably more to add, as it does not cover the internet and we would want it to do that. A well-known website called "punternet" has been mentioned, where not only are prostitutes offered for sale, but there are comments about how they have performed. We want to close that down as quickly as we possibly can.

How on earth do they propose to stop prostitution being discussed and advertised on the internet?

The internet which is unregulated and open for all to use?! :D

Some extreme naivety from the people running our country.

Also if they actually looked on here they may notice that prostitutes are generally on here for a chat and to advertise themselves, not 'offered for sale'!!!

Their ill-informed research make Punternet sound like ebay for pimps :D

....... ebay for pimps

What a phrase, love it - I reckon it could grow legs, especially if Vera or Harriet picked up on it.

I wonder what her stance is on Internet censorship in China, or is it a case of four legs good, two legs bad, yet again.

No question now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

How can she get away with that ? Deliberately misleading Parliament is an illegal Contempt of Parliament.

Labour MP Vera Baird claims, yet again, that punternet is a place where you can buy sexual services:

http://www.theyworkforyou.com/whall/?id=2010-01-21a.145.0&s=internet#g187.0

I introduced myself on a previous thread...might just write this one up (I write for various outlets, including the Register) as another instance of government misinformation.

Anyone prepared to let me have a categoric quote denying the statements would be good. I can be e-mailed on john@ozimek.co.uk or phoned on 01778 344271

You havent mentioned the important point that the Government, of she is a part, wants to close PN down 'as soon as possible'.

The reference to PN is near the end of the article, I had to trawl through the lot, just look near the end of it:(

If 'they' want to close PN down asap, why arent they closing all the peado' sites etc also.

Maybe, just maybe that by leaving the sites up they monitor who is using them which then makes them easier to catch and prosecute.

You never who is watching, and what technologies can be applied:p

Having only joined PN quite recently, it has quickly become one of my favourite forums, having very many fine contributors. A while ago, I joined one thread in which the figure of one particular lady was compared to one of Botticelli's angels. Being a sciences man myself, I got confused with the style of Rubens, but my error was quickly corrected. I concluded therefore, that PN is very much the home of "Renaissance man".

And bless my breeches, even many of the Harlots can read and write, though their proper use of anatomical terminology is little lacking :D

The government cannot close down most as they are hosted abroad, instead they operate through the internet watch foundation instead. The IWF create a watch list of known paedophile sites, which every UK ISP is forced by the government to use to block access to those site. In theory a good idea, very effective in practice. The problem is the IWF like all completely unaccountable organisations are known to be hugely over-zealous. In the past the IWF have blocked Wikipedia and Amazon for having images of album & book covers you can buy in high street stores.

There's a well-known story about the early days of automated anti-spam technology where all communications from the County Councils of Essex and Sussex got blocked because of the letters "s-e-x" in their names! :D

vera is one of the leading figures in the b.u.f (british union of feminazis)

and at the forefront of the govts anti-prostitute campaign,it will be interesting if the govt tries to legally stop advertising as the croyden advertiser & loot are owned by the daily mail group, hardly labour supporters!

will there be time to pass a law banning advertising & would the daily mail group comply?

When they shut Pnet down will it be ok for me to go to the Job Centre to tell them I've ceased trading because the government have stopped advertising?

Then once I've cleared the outstanding tax bill, paid rent on my property and associated bills for 6 months I might start getting towards qualifying for certain benefits. Presuming all those employers out there won't want to take on someone has 'Escort' or 'Unemployed' on their CV for the last 3 years? Not sure how many would be willing to take on the local "Belle De Jour".

Hey I can become a doley layabout then. Yay!

By the way how do they know it's cut trafficking since their figures were all guess work to start with and there has only ever been the odd isolated case of finding trafficked women before and after the ban. In fact the ban probably lowers the chances of catching them at it as it's gone underground. Hey that'll be it - no ads means no ads for trafficked women so it must have worked?Or they are finding less without newpaper intelligence. How daft previously I'm sure cheque or visa payments for the ads would have been traceable, admissable in evidence etc and now that is all removed.

Ta,

I am punter, 40s, computer geek, IT Consultant from East Yorkshire. I only speak for myself not officially for punternet.

Vera Baird claims are at best ill-informed ignorant hyperbole, at worst a deliberate disingenuous attempt to miss-lead parliament.

Punternet does not sell women, it is not the virtual slave market she makes out. The majority of the working girls on punternet are independent escorts with their own websites.

Punternet is an online community that includes both Punters and Escorts, who are able to freely exchange information, views, recommendations, warnings, support or just plain old banal chat found on every social network site out there.

Some important facts:

Prostitution is legal in the UK for both punter and escort that are 18+.

Advertising Prostitution is legal in the UK, it doesn't matter if it's a newspaper, premium sex line, sex-text message or web-site.

Punternet has a strong policies against illegal activities including trafficking, paedophilia, under aged girls et.al.

However deliberately miss-leading parliament is contempt of parliament and a crime.

and the IWF get a lot of their information from ECPAT and other faith based organisations, who will supply list of sites which have nothing to do with kiddy porn but just happen to have names like "young hot boys" (boys who might indeed be hot but in their 30's rather than underage)

Don't forget that kinky porn is now also illegal, vaguely defined as "criminally obscene material" on the IWF's website

I do hope this silly bitch follows her "common criminal" leader, Harriet, and demands that Arnold Schwarzenegger closes the site down!!

We all had a good laugh about that and it increased traffic to the site enormously.

Once again, for the record, the Mods and Admin of Punternet are totally opposed to sexual slavery, enforced sex of any kind and a whole host of illegal activities and are constantly publicly saying so despite the fact that, unlike these whorish politicians we have nothing at all to gain from such a stance and indeed attract the enmity of wrongdoers in taking such a moral stance. We do this because it is the right thing to do, not because it is a vote winner.

It's sites like Punternet that make the internet a safer place for working girls to use to work and for punters to choose ladies who are doing this of their own free will and accord.

I have unfortunately come to the conclusion that you can't make stupid people intelligent and you can't educate them either. They take a stand for whatever reason and stick to it. They only way is to remove them from government and restrict them to a place where they can do no more harm.

I don't think that anybody needs much more proof that what is being said here is in effect a personal vendetta and crusade against prostitutes and, by definition, prostitution per se.

If a large proportion of newspaper advertisements offering sexual services are related to trafficking then this is good news because the adverts will contain contact information that can be used to investigate the advertiser and thus make some inroads in the area of trafficking, however that particular avenue of investigation will not be possible if adverts are discouraged or made illegal, therefore they have no reason to discourage them, in fact they have a very good reason to encourage them, make them free, even pay the advertiser considerable amounts of money for providing the authorities with information; if on the other hand a large proportion of newspaper advertisements offering sexual services are not related to trafficking then there is no reason to discourage them. Either way the decision to discourage newspaper advertisements offering sexual services is illogical, and is, to use a colloquial phrase, shit for brains.

Lynne Featherstone (Hornsey & Wood Green, Liberal Democrat)

I am mystified, given the number of advertisements in the back of local papers that are clearly to do with trafficking, as to why the police do not follow up those telephone numbers, track them down and use them. Yes, such adverts should be banned, but the police say that they do not have the manpower to track those numbers down.

I don't think she got an answer, wonder why? :)

(if someone got an answer, this is her website http://www.lynnefeatherstone.org/)

The trouble is that thanks to the Blessed Virgin Maggie's (Gor bless her and the ground that cannot come to fast to her) policies on mental hospitals (Don't Care in the Community as I recall??) we cannot even do that with these clearly deranged and fragile personalities without an anchor. Maybe we could ask that nice Mr Putin to take them?
