'Hooked' Yet another book.

40 posts in this topic

A retired escort and good friend of mine will have her first book published at the beginning of May. 'HOOKED' by Clare Gee.

The story covers the early life and moves on to her addiction to alcohol, cocaine and how she resorted to prostitution as a means for paying for these. The sad beginning, the life with Dad and then the experience gained on the London club scene as she sank into the brothel culture before moving into one of the leading London Escort agencies. She became one of the most sort after escorts and moved up to the top ten in the '69' popularity charts.

It was in 2004 that she went into rehab and now lives a fairly normal life. IT CAN BE DONE. The book is published by Mainstream who have translated it into other languages has they are optimistic on the number of sales. The lady is very glamorous but down to earth and it will be interesting if you recognise her true identity?

Interesting - though I've now come to the point where I think "read one - read them all". Sorry to say! But good luck to her publication.

Out of interest, this snippet here says:

CLARE GEE has written for The Guardian, Sunday Times, Cosmopolitan, Mail on Sunday and various other magazines.

Her fictionalised memoir, HOOKED, will be published by Mainstream Publishing (publication Spring 2010). The title is set in London during the 90s and early 2000s. The book is filled with explicit depictions of the naughty antics that go on in so-called private members’ clubs in the Capital: drugs, sex, prostitution and lots and lots of booze and let’s not forget the very real aftermath of excessive indulgence.

Nothing is held back. She tells her story in a brutal and humorous manner bringing to life the emotional collapse that can ensue when someone chases happiness in the wrong places.

Aside from writing Clare temps in offices around London and some of her favourite things are: sleep, music, ice-cream, laughter, Shalimar perfumed body lotion, spontaneous weekends away preferably away from a city, but failing countryside – anywhere hot will do!

When is a book of fiction a "fictionalized memoir" rather than a novel?

Answer: When the author wants everybody to assume its true (because that sells more books) without having the inconvenience of writing factually.

A bit like the massive controversy with the book "A million little pieces" (which btw was excellent for what it's worth!) by James Frey. And it turned out to be fairly far removed from the truth too - so much so that Random House offered a full refund to those who bought the book directly from them.

It is a fact that lawyers have a big imput into how a book is presented and take a slice of the cake. In fact so many take a slice that there are only a few crumbs left on the plate. It is a worry that this book is very accurate in presenting the facts as they happened and is a very human story of someone whose life deteriorated as the cocaine and alcohol addiction took hold. It is written as a warning to the 12 year old school girl drinking cider in the bus shelter and thinking it was the done thing. I might be a real softie but I shed a tear or two when I read the draft and I am not related to the author.

Its not your place in the chart, nor the nr of FRs that determines your Qualtiy.

(nor do chars and FRs determine your ultimate success, imho)

I think Dolymopp meant the chart on the Captain69 website.

You are right though, number of positive Frs or reviews (on C69) does not determine anything. Also, as far as I know C69 chart not based on the number and content of reviews also. (I think its by the number of votes, where system has it flaws too).

I am 85% certain who the author of the book might be.

This book is available on Amazon and in the shops this Thursday. It has gone to Number One in the sale charts for books on the subject of prostitution, prior to release. It replaces 'Belle du Jour in top spot. The latter being at the top for many weeks. It is likely that many purchasers will be able to identify the Author after they search her pictures on Google. Those who punted prior to 2003 may even have met her and I am sure they will regret this beautiful, tall, mixed race girl changing her occupation. This is, of course, providing she was not suffering with the after effect of cocaine at their meeting. She is proof that it is possible to escape from the dependance on alcohol and cocaine with a combination of willpower, quality rehab and a beneficiary who has sufficient belief and is prepared to give support. Enjoy the book!

They do indeed! :( but it usually kinda says something when it's discounted before it even hits the shelves..... :D

... and to me - it usually doesn't quite say no.1 best seller. But hey, I could be wrong.

This book is available [...] Enjoy the book!

As has already been pointed out, this story is "fictionalised" - i.e. made up. Nothing wrong with that, but don't pass it off as reality when it's a made up story. The Amazon description does some very nice word bending to cover that up:

"In "Hooked", reformed addict Clare Gee draws on her own experiences of cocaine addiction, alcoholism and prostitution in telling the sensational story of a woman living on the edge."

Notice that it never says that the story is about Clare Gee, but that it is about "a woman living on the edge". It heavily implies that the "woman living on the edge" is Clare Gee - but it doesn't explicitly say that. Because, of course, that's not true.

In fact, justagirl's link at the top of the thread states that:

"CLARE GEE has written for The Guardian, Sunday Times, Cosmopolitan, Mail on Sunday and various other magazines."

This sounds like a journalist, pretending to be an ex-prostitute to cash in on the success of Belle de Jour.

It seems her made-up "memoirs" will have a darker tone that Belle's. Again, nothing wrong with that - but if you are going to write a "memoir" exposing the seedy side of high class prostitution, then it should be a true story, not a made up one. Because this sounds like another journalist making up stories about how bad and nasty prostitution is.

To be polite to Jimmy Bond, I will simply say you are wrong. To be impolite all I can say is 'Balls'. Why do contributors to this forum make comments when they do not know what they are talking about?

I would just like to point out that the marketting of this book has failed to spread its availability to many shops. Neither Waterstones and W.H.Smiths have ordered a copy in my town. I do know that sales have been good at Amazon and the 3 copies at Victoria Station were sold within hours. It seems probable that a second print will take place. Apologiesto those members who PM'd me that copies had not been available at the start of their journeys.

Clare has recorded two interviews for Radio Bristol and Newcastle and Jo Good interviewed her live last Friday on Radio London (listen to i player). She has a number of interviews arranged for this week.

I repeat that I have no financial interest in the sale. Clare is a friend whom I regard as a honorary daughter. She is a 50% Yorkshire lass who has helped me overcome the death of my wife. Her second book is drafted and her agent has this in hand.

Before I advised members about the publication of this book, it had appeared that the market was saturated by books on this subject. Recent weeks have shown that this is not so. Sales of the book have been very good. So much so that it is now having its third print run and the author has been on a number of local radio stations and in two, she has been invited back for repeat appearances. She also was invited onto a discussion programme when the Bradford murders were in the headlines. Next week she has been invited onto daytime National television. A lot can happen in 40 days.

I suggest that other ladies might consider writing their story as a means of opening new possibilties for their future. It will be an emotional journey, opening up your private life to the world but it can be a cleansing action. You may be surprised that people are extremely understanding and the number of friends will increase. There is a real fascination with the subject and bookshelves will quickly empty. It is my belief that sales surprised even the publishers and many readers have been unable to find 'Hooked' pending the reprinting. One word of warning is that your book will not be a huge money making project but it may open opportunities for a new life.

The author has reached the point of having drafted a second book which it is hoped to be published next year. It will also be a factual account of the period after she went into rehab. Anyone who has read her first book will realise that her story could be transformed into a film or TV series and progressing this will not be overlooked. Finally I stress that she had absolutely no knowledge of how to get a book published and was starting from scratch. Neither was she an exceptional English student.

I picked up a copy of this book at whsmith at coventry train station.

I found it very interesting, wether it is fact or fiction i am not debating. It was a good read and its good i feel to see how this job affects other ladies, not everyone is as resiliant as i am which i have found out by chatting to other ladies quite often.

I could find very few similarities to my own experiences as a wg but then again, im a different generation and coming at the job from a different point of view.Funnily the lady gave up in 2002 and that is the year i started.xx

Are there any hooker books that re-count happy times rather than rehab and battling back to normality after falling into a life of ruin involving drugs and prostitution at the mercy of pimps and punters. I read recently of the lady who was Belle De Jour and that seems a far more exciting and inspirational transition through life. Must admit the TV programme put the seed in my head telling me ' I ' could punt if I put my mind to it.
