Weekend Woman's Hour

4 posts in this topic

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere. Am rushing round like a blue *rsed fly as have a deadline to meet. Just caught part of the segment on prostitution (About 40 mins in) http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/listenagain/2009_10_sat.shtml Although it was about women as punters the academic interviewed (Belinda Brookes Gordon of Birkbeck College, London Uni) made some interesting points about female prostitution. If I heard aright whilst rushing back & forth she was saying something about many feminists validating a woman's right to say YES (eg to working in the sex industry) as well as to say no, and it's a pity that the debate recently has been taken over by radical feminists.

Sorry- don't have time to listen fully & do a summary... have a listen & see what you think.

Thanks Biggus

It starts at 37 mins and 32 secs and lasting to 49 mins

It is interesting because the lady interviewed has suffered

quite a bit of 'heartache' but this was not revealed until after the interview

was played.

Prior to that I had thought she was a 'lady fluffy'

They interviewed also a male escort who IMHO did not do the subject justice

along with a brief snippet from the researchers, who

provide an interesting insight on the 'stigma' regarding the word prostitute'

I am not quite sure what to make the show TBH. At least it may be the start

for some listeners who are not coversant with the subject matter

Been done before, but I always revisit this chart: the Feminists views on Prostitution.

Not all feminists are anti, far from it acutally.

And some Ardent Feministat are actually Good WLs and vice versa !

http://www.geocities.com/ptr_leeds/blog_2008_03/feminism_chart.pdf

I'm in the Liberal camp myself.

As excellent a summary this chart may provide...

I am not sure if there has been a 'dialectical' analysis of

'prostitution and men' or women who

use 'WB' (Working Boys)

or has there (in keeping with the Radio 4 show)??

Your next mission ptrleeds is to find such a chart :D

Good luck in your mission :D
