New Guardian Comment Piece

4 posts in this topic

Nathalie Rothschild has published a piece in todays Guardian, Comment is Free, covering the recent debate at the London Institute of Contemporary Arts:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/mar/13/prostitution-humantrafficking?commentpage=1&commentposted=1

It can be summed up as saying that most sex workers, even mogrants, don't want to be rescued by Smith, Harman & their cohorts & that trafficking is being used as a cover for attempts to deal with immigration issues.

Additionally, it points out that it might be best to actually speak to sex workers about what they want & to decriminalise the industry.

Its a fact of life that those who believe they hold the 'higher ground' will want to 'save the masses'. Consultation can only really take place among 'equals'

I think it has more to do with the leftist feminists presumption that sex workers are unfortunates that need to be nannied rather than free thinking individuals controlling their own means of production of wealth.

More of an unholy alliance of right wing moralists ("prostitution is icky & we must rescue these fallen women so that they can repent their sin of having debased something so sacred as sex") & the Separatist RadFems who see prostitution as being the ultimate expression of male patriarchal oppression of women (these women - forget the male & transgender sex workers, as they don't exist or don't count - are victims & need saving. Any who don't accept their victim status are too hard of thinking to realilse that they are victims & can therefore be told what's best for them & rescued whether they want it or not).
