What to do if we suspect someone of being trafficked?

6 posts in this topic

A hypothetical question...

If I was seeing an escort and everything appeared to be fine, but then at the end of the appointment I realise something is wrong and she may well be trafficked.

If I report to the police of this incident, will I be putting myself at risk of prosecution for seeing the woman in question, if indeed, she is trafficked?

How should a punter go about reporting an incident without putting himself at risk?

call crimestoppers. If you want to be secure, use a payphone.

It's not a criminal offence to see a trafficked prostitute. It is though a criminal offence to pay for the sexual services of a prostitute subject to exploitative conduct ie. force, threats (whether or not relating to violence) or any other form of coercion, or deception.

As Kinky says - call Crimestoppers from an anonymous payphone.

I doubt very much that you would be putting yourself at risk. I would make a coded note of the place and time of the call and keep it safe. Even if they were able to trace you ( and had the resources to do so) I really cannot see that the authorities are going to want to prosecute the individual who made the call. It is going to be a difficult enough offence to prosecute in any event.

An excellent idea, with one draw-back! Redline seems to be fixated on "Trafficking"!

Others more up to date will confirm (or sink me) but I'm pretty sure that if a Tajik maiden of full years and full knowledge of "the game" decides that she'll do better in UK than in Dushanbe, and herself, with her own fair hands, pays an evil people smuggler $10k to get her into UK, where she joyfully joins FelicitysSuperstars and makes a small killing, she is still a "trafficked woman" even if she wanted to be so!

I'm sure that Redline will treat reports of women under some variety of coercion or pressure seriously, but I'd be a lot happier if they said so, and provided an e-mail address to which routine messages could be sent!

yes the cicumstance you describe is considered trafficking. However it would be regualar people trafficking as opposed to trafficking for sexual exploitation unless the smuggler was also the agency boss or someone linked with them. In either case you yourself, as the punter, would not be guilty of any crime as she's not being forced, threatened, deceived or coerced.
