Another Parliamentary Enquiry into Prostitution has been launched
August 17, 2019 23:04
The Women and Equalities Parliamentary Select Committee has just launched a new inquiry into prostitution. If you have submitted your views on sex work to any previous enquiry, it would definitely be worth retrieving your previous submission, tweaking it a bit to focus on the theme of this enquiry, and submitting it by the deadline of 20 September. We can rest assured that those who would wish to completely outlaw sex work by any means will be submitting.

Here are the details. I have highlighted in red those points which I think the UKE community are particularly well qualified to address.

Prostitution: how can we tackle inequalities and harm?

The Women and Equalities Committee launches a new inquiry into prostitution.

Purpose of the inquiry
The Women and Equalities Committee is looking to:

What harms are associated with buying and selling sex?
How effective are Government policies in tackling this?
What more could be done?

The Committee is also interested in hearing about how those with specific protected characteristics under the Equality Act or other vulnerabilities are affected.

We will look at prostitution with a focus on inequalities and harm
Committee Chair Maria Miller said:
“This inquiry presents an important opportunity.
Previous reviews of law and policy have focussed on the important issues of reforming the criminal law and which legislative model is most effective.
This inquiry casts the net wider, and we will look at prostitution with a focus on inequalities and harm.
We want to look at how prostitution impacts different groups, and how policy and services could be tailored to address particular kinds of inequality and harm.
All women – indeed, anyone negatively impacted by prostitution - must have equal access to safety and justice.
We need to bring some new ideas to this debate, and we particularly welcome views from those who are or have been involved in prostitution.”

There are between 60,000 and 80,000 sex workers in the UK
The majority of prostitutes are women. Research suggests that the majority of buyers are male. There may be a significant minority of trans and male prostitutes/sex workers.
Around 11% of British men aged 16–74 have paid for sex at least once;
LGBT: Some respondents to the Government’s 2017 LGBT Research Survey discussed “sex work” as “an essential source of employment.” Some trans respondents said they had undertaken sex work to pay privately for gender reassignment and related treatment due to waiting lists for GI clinics;

Send us your views
The Committee is keen to hear views from organisations and is particularly interested in receiving submissions which address:

What, if any, harms associated with buying and selling sex? Who is affected? How?
How does buying and selling sex affect attitudes towards women more widely?
What local initiatives are you aware of that address these harms? Are they effective? Why?
What, if any, are the challenges for those facing harm in accessing services (for example, healthcare; support services; advice; exit services)? What needs to change?
What relevance does the Public Sector Equality Duty have for the way that public authorities address prostitution in their area?
How does the law currently treat paying for sex? How could law and policy be improved to address harm?
How effective are different international approaches at addressing any harms associated with buying and selling sex?

The closing date for written submissions is Friday 20 September.

Please use the written submission form which can be found at the foot of the enquiry web page

These 'consultations' are worthless. The 'conclusions' have already been reached.

Quite true Ordinary bloke.

The effect prostitution has on those thousands of foreign WGs who are pimped, coerced, trafficked and managed in my country,it wouldn't be great. In all the years i have visited English escorts they've worked in a flat by themselves that's how they preferred it.Most foreign independent WGs live in properties that are shared.I have read comments and been told by punters "if you do not see a pimp, you just don't know",bullshit!.If a punter goes to a flat shared by Roms,Poles or Asian escorts, that tells me a lot.

It says on the ECPs twitter account they want prostitution decriminalizing (good luck to them on that) so WGs can work together and be safe. It's only trafficked escorts who work together,English escorts prefer to escort in flats by themselves. If that's how it is in The West Midlands it must be like that everywhere else in England.

It also says on the ECPs twitter account the New Zealand model is the best way. They don't say that barebacking is common over there, trafficking is on the increase and a third of prostitutes in New Zealand are Chinese many of them are Street whores who cause problems in cities and towns.Residents are too scared to complain.

In Germany it is legal for driving instructors to proposition young female learner drivers to pay them in sex instead of money.

I don't think legalising prostitution ever works.I was quite happy back in the day when i visited parlours with English girls working in them before we went in the EU.The councils closed them all down.Adultwork isn't so great these days every other profile is a Romanian escort or other foreign WGs who just got off the plane.

I had a change of heart.I couldn't let one escort down.,when i left that flat a few weeks ago ,i'd just pounded the shit out of this Asian girl,it pissed me off when that pimp came back to the flat for his cut,i bet the twat had half of her money.I decided i would come back to the Midlands and see Sexy Sunita every 6,7 or 8 weeks in Birmingham. She is fucking sexy.

While I understand you being cynical about these consultations, it is very important that we paricipate and make sure the enquiry hears about the positive sides of the sex industry and challenges the inbuilt assumption about "inequalities and harm''.

I am totally opposed to sex workers being traffiked or otherwise forced to work in the sex industry, but there are existing laws that should deal with this. I also believe that if a woman, or man, wants to work in the industry the legal framework should make this as safe as possible for them and the punters. I believe that the so-called 'Nordic' Model' (going after the punters) does not work. When this was intorduced in Northern Ireland, I did some statistical work to count the number of 'Escorts' advertising on various popular web sites. Surprisingly, the number went up after the law was introduced.

I recognise that the legal frameworks in Germany and New Zealand are far from perfect, but much better than the laws we currently have in England. I will be drafting my submission along the above lines in the next few weeks.

I don't think much of the Nordic Model, ours or the New Zealand prostitution laws and from what i have read the NZPC are bullies.I don't know much about Northern Ireland i haven't got round to reading upon it yet. Those cheap sex holidays to countries such as Thailand and Vietnam don't sit well with me.I do find it alarming the huge number of foreign prostitutes advertising on VS and Adultwork that are trafficked. This seems to be a problem we have had in England the last 10 years.I don't ever remember coming across foreign escorts in the 1990s or just after the millennium. At the end of the day it's politicians who make and change laws.Prostitution is the oldest profession and will go on.The last few escorts i booked were English except this one Asian girl,i have finished with foreign escorts.I will just see the one Indian escort.I think those punters who use independent escorts it's far better to see British WGS.

I am not being cynical, merely stating what the real position is. You are deluding yourself if you think otherwise.

I don't think it surprising that observed escort advertisers increased. It's obvious that street prositutes and walk up brothel business would be expected to fall.

The state has no business interfering in consensual sex between adults, paid or otherwise.

The notion of adding even more criminal offences when hardly any existing ones are prosecuted just makes the whole idea even more ridiculous.

I am totally against trafficking in sex workers or being forced into the sex industry, but there are laws in place that must address this. I also believe that if a woman, or a man, wants to work in the industry, the legal framework has to make it as safe as possible for them and the gamblers. I think the so-called "Nordic model" (stalking the gamblers) doesn't work. When this was introduced in Northern Ireland, I did some statistical work to calculate the number of "escort" ads on various popular websites. Surprisingly, the number increased after the law was implemented.
